KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s wholesale and retail sales increased 8.5% year-on-year (year-on-year) to RM117.2 billion in February 2022, according to the Department Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
However, month-over-month (mom), the value of wholesale and retail trade sales fell 2.5% due to the 4.7% contraction in the wholesale trade sub-sector .
In a statement today, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin attributed the best performance to the retail sub-sector which grew by 10.2% or RM4.5 billion to 48.8 billion from RM.
“Growth in the retail sub-sector was supported by retail sales at non-specialty stores which increased by 15.9% or RM2.5 billion to reach RM18.3 billion.
“Similarly, other groups within this sub-sector also recorded positive growth, namely retail sales of automotive fuels (+18.1%), retail sales of household goods (+9.8% ) and retail sales in specialized stores (+5.6%). ),” he said.
At the same time, retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco also increased by 8.6%, retail sales of cultural and recreational goods improved by 5.7%, retail sales excluding stores, stalls or markets increased by 25.9%, and retail sales in stalls and markets increased by 8.8%.
Wholesale also increased by 6.2% or RM3.3 billion to RM55.9 billion, with the growth attributed to other specialty wholesalers which increased by 6.0% to 22, RM3 billion.
“This was followed by wholesale food, drink and tobacco which increased by 9.2% to RM10.9 billion,” said Mohd Uzir, adding that the wholesale trade in materials raw agricultural and live animals also increased by 15.9% to RM4.7 billion. .
He noted that the motor vehicle subsector grew by 12.5% or RM1.4 billion to reach RM12.5 billion in February 2022, attributed to sales of motor vehicle parts and accessories which increased. increased by 27% to RM3.5 billion.
The expansion was also supported by growth in motor vehicle maintenance and repair (+27.3%), motor vehicle sales (+3.3%) and the sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles (+5.1%).
Meanwhile, the Internet Retail Sales Index for February 2022 recorded 19.8% year-on-year growth. – Bernama
